Chaotic Vibration of the One-Dimensional Wave
Equation due to Nonlinear Feedback Boundary Control

Abstract

Chaos or turbulence due to nonlinearities in partial differential equations is a vast open research area. In this talk we will study some cases of simple nonlinear boundary conditions for the initial-boundary value problem of the one-dimensional linear wave equation. We show heuristically several routes to causes of chaos, including period-doubling, homoclinic orbits, energy injection, energy transport, etc. Chaotic behavior of wave vibration will be illustrated by computer graphics.
