Mathematics and Mathematics Education

Assistant Professor


The Department of Mathematics and Statistics and the Department of Curriculum, Instruction and Leadership invite applications for a joint appointment to a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the area of mathematics and mathematics education. Primary appointment will be in the Department of Curriculum, Instruction and Leadership. The starting date will be August, 2000 (earlier, if candidate is available).

About the position

Responsibilities of this position include teaching, research, and service. A typical teaching assignment each semester would consist of a section of a mathematics content course for elementary education majors and a methods course for mathematics majors in the University's Secondary Teacher Education Program and/or student supervision in this program. The opportunity exists for graduate teaching in mathematics education. The candidate's research work may involve mathematics, mathematics education, or a combination of these two areas. Service duties will consist initially of serving as liaison between the two departments, with increasing responsibilities over time.

Qualifications

Candidates must have a doctoral degree in mathematics or mathematics education, teacher certification, and three years K-12 teaching experience. Preference will be given to candidates with a broad knowledge of and interest in pure and applied mathematics.

Oakland University is a vital, growing public institution with approximately 14,500 students, offering baccalaureate, masters, and doctoral programs. The Department of Mathematics and Statistics has 27 full-time faculty members who have research strengths in pure and applied mathematical sciences. The Department offers bachelors degrees in mathematics and statistics, masters degrees in mathematics, industrial applied mathematics, and applied statistics, and a Ph.D. in applied mathematical sciences. The Department of Curriculum, Instruction and Leadership, with 15 full-time faculty members engaged in a wide range of educational research, offers accredited undergraduate programs designed to prepare students for careers in elementary and secondary teaching. At the graduate level, the Department offers a Ph.D. in educational leadership, an Educational Specialist degree in school administration, and a Master of Education degree with concentrations in leadership or in curriculum and instruction for both elementary and secondary education, as well as several nondegree programs. The Secondary Teacher Education Program (STEP) is a joint effort of the College of Arts and Sciences and the School of Education and Human Services. It is a five-year undergraduate program leading to teacher certification.
